While applying for universities, you are often recommended to check for certain approvals, rankings and accreditations. One of those approvals is given by the AICTE or the All India Council for Technical Education. AICTE can be understood as a statutory body and a national-level council that specialises in technical education in India. It works under the supervision of the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education. AICTE was established back in November 1945 and worked in the role of an advisory body. In 1987, it was awarded the statutory status by an Act of Parliament.
The supervision of the planning and development of technical education in India rests with the AICTE.
The following are the functions of AICTE:
The AICTE approves institutions and their courses in the areas of technical and management. They also ensure that these courses meet the guidelines and the standards that are set.
The advisory body AICTE plans the policies that concern these courses and manages their implementation in the fields of technical education such as engineering, technology, architecture, town planning, management, pharmacy, applied arts & crafts, and hotel management.
AICTE is an advisory body but also has to conduct regular inspections to keep an eye on the institutions so that there is no mismanagement or loophole in meeting the education standards.
The advisory body announced that scholarships would be available for girls. This was done with the purpose of encouraging their participation in the areas of management of computer applications after completion of their engineering courses. It was also announced that a total of INR 7.5 crore is to be spent every year on this scheme and its implementation. AICTE further announced that admissions to programmes such as BCA, BBA and BMS will be conducted under the body itself from the 2024-2025 academic session. This is also the first time that the advisory body has approved the teaching of courses such as BBA, BCA and BMS.
“From the 2024-25 academic session, more than 3,000 meritorious BBA, BCA and BMS students from economically weaker sections will be awarded scholarships. In this, they will be paid ₹25,000 annually,” said a senior AICTE official on condition of anonymity.
The scholarship announcement was made on the occasion of International Women’s Day and was announced by the AICTE chairman Professor T.G. Sitharam and Rohini Bhajibhakare who is the Private Secretary.
There have been various schemes that have proven to be successful and the number of girls in the field of engineering has also increased. In the year 2019, the number figure showed 29% which became 30% in 2020 and in 2021, the number rose to 36%. Moving forward, in the year 2022, the number of girls increased in courses such as diplomas in engineering as well as engineering undergraduate courses.

Previously, the All India Council for Technical Education- AICTE approved three thousand scholarships for female students who wished to study courses like BBA, BCA or BMS. Additionally, they released the modern curriculum framework, focusing on training the teachers. AICTE also announced that the faculty and the students from the AICTE-approved institutions would automatically become eligible for the schemes announced by the body. Schemes such as the ATAL pop programmes, Innovation initiative, IDEA Lab, ELP schemes, Research promotion schemes, Saksham scholarship schemes, Parakh, Internship programmes, etc.
Students who belong to the economically weaker sections of society are overburdened with the responsibilities of juggling their academic performance as well as their diminishing finances. Moreover, when girls come from such backgrounds, it becomes even more difficult for them to access their desired opportunities. As a result, they lag behind. Therefore, there is always a need for an advisory body that can look after the educational needs of such children.
AICTE has a PRAGATI scheme that looks after the education of female students in the engineering fields. It aimed to announce special schemes for female children in undergraduate management to ensure that there is gender equality in this industry. Scholarships, grants, financial aid and loans are provided easily, however, not in the fields of engineering and technology. Fields like these often have more male students than female but through such decisions by the AICTE, the chances for both male and female students will come closer to being equal.
AICTE is a body that is responsible for accrediting the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that fall under the specific categories of technology across all Indian institutions.
