Calicut University was founded in Malappuram, Kerala, in 1968. The university is governed by the Calicut University Act of 1975, which was passed by the Kerala Legislative Assembly. Calicut University placed in the rank band 101–150 in the overall category and 70th in the universities category of the NIRF Ranking 2023. It has received recognition from the UG-DEB and has received a fourth A+ accreditation from the NAAC. With 34 departments and 406 affiliated colleges, it is a state university and the biggest residential college-affiliating university in Kerala.
