Fast and Accurate Calculator
If you are a student, you may have faced a situation where you need to convert your SGPA to CGPA at least once. This is where SGPA and CGPA converter calculator come in. These are 2 important metrics that are used in universities across India.
But you do not have to worry about it as we will be explaining everything about SGPA to CGPA converter from A to Z.
As you all know that your grades are the stepping stones of your academic journey and each semester presents a new challenge. The performance of your academic journey is usually reflected in SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average).
These stepping stones may vary in size and difficulty, some semesters might be more happening while some may not be as expected. The CGPA, on the other hand, takes a broader view and encompass your performance across all semesters which gives a holistic perspective of your academic achievements.
SGPA stands for Semester Grade Point Average.Let me make it simple for you. It is like a representation of your academic performance in a specific semester. Whenever you choose any course, you also get some credit value and a letter grade based on your marks. SGPA generally shows these factors to provide you with an overview of your semester's achievements.
SGPA provides a clear picture of your performance and allows you to identify areas where you need to give more attention and where you excelled.
Also, when you apply for scholarships in universities, many of them consider your SGPA when they evaluate your application. A good SGPA will show the strength of your academic journey which will give more weight to your application. There is one more factor remaining, yes you can use these SGPA for job perspective as well. This can be a positive point during job applications, especially for roles that require strong analytical or research skills.
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the popular method of measuring academic achievements across semesters. This method is generally used by many universities. In simpler terms, CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is a metric that simplifies a student's performance into a single score, much like a gymnast's all-around score reflects their entire routine.
Aspect | SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) | CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) |
---|---|---|
Calculation | It is calculated for a single semester. | It is calculated for multiple semesters. |
Scope | It reflects performance in one semester. | It reflects overall performance over time. |
Feedback | It provides semester-specific feedback. | It provides cumulative feedback. |
Use | It is mostly used for immediate evaluation. | It is mostly used for long-term assessment. |
Academic records | It appears in academic transcripts for each semester. | It appears in academic transcripts as an overall score. |
Weightage | It carries weight for that specific semester. | It carries weight for the entire academic programme. |
If you are a student exploring grades and averages in your academic journey, you must have encountered the terms SGPA and CGPA. Converting one to the other remains exclusive. But you do not have to worry about it. We are here to shed light on this topic and guide you through the process step by step.
But before calculating CGPA from SGPA, you should know how to calculate SGPA and its components. Then, you will be able to convert SGPA to CGPA.
Calculating your SGPA for a semester is straightforward. Here is how:
Step 1. Start by noting down the credit points for each subject from your performance sheet.
Step 2. Multiply each subject's credit points by its grade.
Step 3. Add up all the results from step 2.
Step 4. Add together all the credit points for each subject.
Step 5. Divide the sum from step 3 by the sum from step 4.
Step 6. Finally, the result is your SGPA for that semester.
For eg: Example in Action: Let's see calculation!
Suppose you have chosen the following 4 subjects in a semester:
Subject | Credits | Grade |
---|---|---|
English Literature | 3 | 8 |
History | 4 | 7 |
Mathematics | 5 | 8 |
Science | 4 | 7 |
Follow these steps for the calculations:
Step 1: First you have to write all the credit points for each subject – 3,4,5,4.
Step 2: Now you need to multiply the credit point of each subject by its grade:
Step 3: You need to add the results of multiplications for each subject: 24 + 28 + 40 + 28 = 120
Step 4: Then add all the credit points for each subject: 3 + 4 + 5 + 4 = 16
Step 5: Then you need to divide total from Step 3 by the total from Step 4: 120/16 = 7.5.
Step 6: The result is approx. 7.5, this is the final outcome.
Now that you have learned how to calculate SGPA, let's see how to convert SGPA to CGPA. Here is How to convert SGPA to CGPA
To convert SGPA to CGPA, you just need a simple SGPA to CGPA converter formula:
CGPA = (SGPA Sem 1 to SGPA Sem 6) / (Total Semesters)
Suppose you are an intelligent biology student who has completed 2 semesters. Here is how to convert your SGPAs to CGPA:
Semester 1 | Credits | Grade Point |
---|---|---|
Biology | 4 | 8.5 |
Chemistry | 4 | 9.0 |
Physics | 3 | 7.8 |
Semester 2 | Credits | Grade Point |
---|---|---|
Genetics | 4 | 8.0 |
Organic Chemistry | 4 | 8.8 |
Mathematics | 3 | 7.5 |
Step 1: First of all you need to calculate each Semester's SGPA.
This is the initial process that you need to calculate for each semester. You have to multiply the credit points by the grade point for each subject and then add them all up.
Then, divide this sum by the total number of credits in that semester.
Semester 1 SGPA = [(4 x 8.5) + (4 x 9.0) + (3 x 7.8)] / (4 + 4 + 3) = 8.2
Semester 2 SGPA = [(4 x 8.0) + (4 x 8.8) + (3 x 7.5] / (4 + 4 + 3) = 8.1
Step 2: Find the CGPA
Now, add the SGPAs from both semesters and divide by the total number of semesters (which in this case is 2).
CGPA = (Semester 1 SGPA + Semester 2 SGPA) / Total Semesters
CGPA = (8.2 + 8.1) / 2
CGPA = 8.15
Voila! Your CGPA is 8.15. This tells you that, on average, you have performed exceptionally well across both semesters.
According to UGC guidelines, institutions use grading systems to represent percentages and grade points. Below are the grades, their corresponding grade points, and the percentage scale.
So, by now you must have got a clear idea about how to calculate your CGPA from SGPA score. By now you have an idea of what a CGPA and an SGPA is, how they are different from each other and how each one is calculated. You have also got an idea of the letter grade approved by UGC depending upon the grade points. It is important to remember that grades are just one piece of the puzzle. Your true learning and intellectual growth extend far beyond these numbers.
So, keep striving for knowledge, keep exploring, and keep pushing yourself to learn and grow!
Good Luck!
