Online BBA to Chartered Accountancy (CA): Is it Possible?

Do you wish to pursue a CA after your online BBA? Are you looking to broaden your career prospects? Pursuing an online BBA would enhance your management knowledge and skills. While in CA, you would hone your finance and accounting skills. So, this is a collaboration of modern business and traditional financial education. This career path would present you with an ample amount of job opportunities.

It is very right to say, ‘Where there is a will, there is a way.’ Chartered Accountancy from an online BBA may not be the conventional way, but it’s possible. Yes, it may not be the easiest journey, but it would be rewarding. Chartered Accountancy is like a cherry on top of an online BBA. This professional mix of two degrees would equip you with the skill set necessary to tackle complex business issues.

In this blog, we shall take you through the different aspects of an online BBA and CA. Furthermore, we would also discuss the links and challenges between the two. So, buckle up, as it’s going to be a bumpy ride into the exploration of online BBA and CA and the career options thereafter.

What is an Online BBA?

Similar to a traditional BBA, an online BBA is a three-year degree. However, the difference lies in the delivery of classes. In the realm of online education, you attend online classes and enjoy flexible schedules, accessibility, and affordability. You can access the study material 24/7 at your convenience and, at the same time, balance your other responsibilities. The biggest benefit of an online degree is that strict schedules or the classroom wall do not limit you. Rather, the world is your classroom, full of opportunities.

What is Chartered Accountancy?

A Chartered Accountant (CA) is a professional with expertise in accounting, auditing, corporate laws, costing, and some other laws. As a CA, you would provide financial services such as financial reporting, auditing, tax planning, strategy making, etc. The course is offered by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), and to become a CA, you must go through a rigorous process. It requires you to clear three levels of exams: foundation, intermediate, and final. However, you are also required to complete articleship and IT training post this.

The Link Between Online BBA and CA

In the current job market, if you wish to have a successful corporate career, then a mix of professional and management courses is a must. Today, if you wish to reach leadership positions, organisations want someone who has both a management and a professional degree. This combination, of course, would give you an edge over others in the competitive world.

1. The Curriculum Connection: Syllabus Overlap

Today, colleges offer rigorous and industry-specific curricula in the BBA course. To make learning interesting and relevant, colleges are discarding theory-based knowledge and moving to a learner-centric approach. Now, a curriculum is designed in collaboration with experts, which makes it case-study and project-based.

This recent shift in the curriculum overlaps with the CA’s syllabus. Let’s understand the overlap from the examples. For comparison, we shall take a sample of the Symbiosis University Online BBA syllabus.

Sample Syllabus of Semesters 1 and 2 for Online BBA:

Semester 1 Semester 2
Basics of Management Information System Business Statistics
Business Accounting Environmental Studies
Business Entrepreneurship Fundamentals of Marketing
Organisational Behaviour Management Accounting
Principles of Microeconomics Macroeconomics Theory
Management Essentials Human Resource Management
Business Mathematics Corporate Governance and Ethics

CA Syllabus:

Foundation Intermediate Final
Accounting Advanced Accounting Financial Reporting
Business Laws Corporate and Other Laws Advanced Financial Management
Quantitative Aptitude Taxation Advanced Auditing, Assurance and Professional Ethics
Business Economics Cost and Management Accounting Direct Taxation and International Taxation
Auditing and Ethics Indirect Tax Laws
Financial Management and Strategic Management Integrated Business Solutions

All the highlighted subjects in both syllabi represent similarities between the two. If you take a deeper look, you would realise that we have just taken the first two semesters until now. So, if you plan to pursue CA with or after an online BBA, it would not be as different as expected. While online BBA discusses the fundamentals of these subjects, CA takes a deeper and more advanced take on those areas. Subjects like business laws, financial management, cost accounting, etc. are some other examples of similarities that you would find in the later semesters.

2. Unlocking the Doors: Discovering the Eligibility for CA

First, ICAI allows you to complete the CA foundation and intermediate while doing BBA. However, there are two ways in which you can pursue the course.

  • After 10+2: With your 10+2, you are eligible to sit for the Common Proficiency Test (CPT). This CPT allows you to enrol in a CA course. It is an objective test comprising 4 subjects: general economics, quantitative aptitude, mercantile law, and fundamentals of accounting.

  • Direct Entry Scheme: This scheme fast-tracks your route to the CA intermediate level, subject to the prerequisites. In this scheme, commerce graduates with a minimum of 55% marks and non-commerce graduates with a minimum of 60% marks can only enrol directly. Before starting your articleship, complete your orientation programme and information technology (ICITSS). Register for a 3-year articleship and complete the first 9 months before sitting for the CA intermediate exams. You can also apply as a final-year student; however, for this, you must register provisionally.

Advantages of Switching to CA After/With an Online BBA

Pursuing a CA with or after an online BBA entails numerous benefits. You can benefit from both the managerial and financial worlds. In this dynamic world, this combination helps you equip a versatile and diverse skill set.

Ready to Take on Leadership Roles

The combination of knowledge and skills makes you an effective leader. You are better equipped to make managerial and financial decisions leading to sustainable growth. Organisations also seek candidates who have multiple skills and the capacity to handle different roles at the same time, especially in a startup.

Diverse Range of Career Options

These two courses open up a broad range of opportunities across different industries and roles. With a CA and a BBA, you can enter industries such as finance, consultancy etc. You can help a business grow by taking viable solutions for complex issues.

Lucrative Pay Scale

Your skills would significantly boost your credibility in the eyes of an employer. The average salary of a CA is INR 10.0 LPA; however, the income depends on other factors such as experience, organisation, etc. Yet, a CA is one of the most trusted professions in the field of commerce. This profession opens you up to a higher salary potential than many job roles.

Turning Hurdles into Stepping Stones: Exploring the Challenges

This shift from an online BBA to a CA won’t be easy. CA requires intense hard work and commitment to clear the exams, whereas an online BBA offers you complete flexibility. The transition would also require long hours of education and, on some days, a balance of work and studies during the articleship. At this time, you would need complete self-discipline and courage to keep going even on the hard days.

To clear CA exams, you need in-depth learning of financial aspects. Switching from theory-based managerial concepts to practical and number-based financial concepts can be hard. In such cases, being patient and taking one day at a time works. Make a schedule, seek guidance, and take one concept at a time to be able to adapt to the changes.

Tips for a Successful Shift to CA

Here are the tips that you must follow for a successful career as a CA with an online BBA.

  • If you plan to pursue CA, then make an effective plan.

  • Reach out to mentors for guidance and do thorough research yourself.

  • Choose whether you want to do CA with the online BBA or after it because you need to register accordingly.

  • Whatever the plan, start learning early, focus on similar subjects in both courses and build a strong foundation for those courses specifically.

  • If given a choice of specialisation or an elective in BBA, then choose the one that aligns with CA’s syllabus.

  • To gain practical experience before your articleship, apply for internships with exposure to finance.
